Ultrasound scans use sound waves to create a picture of the baby in the womb. Most women have one or more ultrasound scans during pregnancy. The two scans routinely offered during pregnancy are the nuchal scan and the anatomy scan.
Now the year-old has demanded more scans for mums-to-be after two scans, a dating scan and a fetal anomaly scan at 20 weeks for all.
Being nervous is totally normal. Typically the first ultrasound in your pregnancy, the dating scan gives us a very astute estimate of the date your little guy or gal will arrive. Generally, the dating scan takes place between 10 and 12 weeks of pregnancy, though it can be as early as 8 weeks. The scan will allow your doctor to confirm your pregnancy and whether the fetus is properly implanted and developing normally inside your womb.
The scan will check that your baby has a healthy heart beat and that it is developing normally as well as examine the health of your uterus and surround pelvic structures to ensure everything will be smooth sailing right up until your next visit, right around 20 weeks. The anomaly scan will usually take place between 18 and 22 weeks of pregnancy. Just as with the dating scan, you should come in with a full bladder to allow for better viewing.
Once the exam is under way, your doctor will measure and check your baby from top to bottom, including her brain, spine, stomach, kidneys and even the four chambers of her heart to ensure that everything is normal. The best part is you get to watch the whole thing, which can be really exciting! Depending on the results of the anomaly scan, your doctor may advise further testing. For moms over the age of 35, past the due date, or expecting multiples, regular ultrasound monitoring is more likely.

This to ensure the safety of our patients and staff. We are pleased to announce that from today Tuesday 14 th July , partners will again be able to accompany mums-to-be to their week dating scans, week anomaly scans and growth scans. The trust was forced to introduce restrictions following the announcement of the lockdown back in March, because it was not possible for partners to remain socially distanced in the confined settings of the scan rooms. However, the recent decision to allow visitors back into non COVID areas of the hospital, conditional on the wearing of face coverings, has enabled us to review the access arrangements for partners, and having undertaken new risk assessments we can now allow them to attend again.
Please note that children are not permitted to attend scans with partners, regardless of age. To those parents-to-be who were not able to share this special moment during the lockdown restrictions, we fully understand your frustrations and we sympathise with your predicament. We hope you understand that the safety of our patients and staff has been our number one priority at all times, and it simply has not been possible to allow partners to attend scans until now.
Please note — although partners will be permitted to attend the above scans, they will not be able to accompany you to any separate appointments you may have, as social distancing requirements will still be in force in our waiting area, nor will they be able to accompany you to the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit EPAU , where the waiting area is similarly restricted.
We acknowledge that there may be exceptional circumstances that makes this policy difficult for you and we would encourage you to discuss this with your midwife.
